A little over a year ago, actress Margot Robbie secretly married Tom Ackerley in Australia, and the wedding was eventually followed by a delayed honeymoon in Tahiti. The contents of that memorable time period, however, were concealed up until Wednesday, January 10, when the I, Tonya actress made her very first appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“Tell people how we know each other,” DeGeneres instructed Robbie.
“My husband is going to kill me for telling this story, but it’s my favorite story ever,” Robbie replied. “It’s the story of how Ellen and I met.”
The Suicide Squad star then launched into the tale of her honeymoon with Ackerley, which involved several days in a remote “shack” on one of the islands, followed by a stay at a luxurious hotel to cap the trip. However, when the pair arrived on-site, the weather was less-than-ideal, prompting the couple to look for an alternative activity.
“We get changed to go to the gym, and Tom puts on these shorts that are like, his oldest gym shorts—and they’re tiny and they’re, like, really short and there’s nothing underneath,” she recalled. “He gets on his bicycle to ride there and I’m like, ‘Woah! Babe, you cannot wear those shorts. I can see everything.’ And he’s like, ‘Oh, come on. Who are we going to run into? Who’s going to be here?’”
When the couple got to the fitness site, on one treadmill was DeGeneres, joined by her wife, Portia de Rossi. “Already, Tom and I are like, ‘Oh my God,’” Robbie continued. “I was already starstruck… And then, you’re like… ‘Have you met Obama?’ And we’re like, ‘What?’ And standing next to them is former President Barack Obama. I’m not kidding. In a gym that is tiny.”
Then, the couple joined a stretching class. “But Tom, meanwhile, is trying to not reveal anything. And he’s dying, and I’m crying so much I’m about to crack a rib,” she said. “This gym instructor keeps saying to Tom, ‘Tom, lunge. Lunge! You’re not lunging!’ And Tom’s like trying to lunge cross-legged, and Obama’s like stepping over his legs to put his weights back. The whole thing was so absurd.”
DeGeneres corroborated the shortness of Ackerley’s shorts—and cracked a joke about it. “Ellen looks over and goes, ‘Boy, those were the wrong shorts to wear today,’” Robbie recalled. “[Obama] happened to be there writing his book, so we were working out with him every day. And when you walked in and he’s in those shorts I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is going to be hilarious.’”
