Marriage is all about give and take, but what happens when the balance is off? The Married at First Sight newlyweds are finding out how difficult it is to be legally bound to a stranger.

On the September 6 episode, all three couples are dealing with difficult emotions. While two duos are making it work in new homes, one match isn’t on speaking terms. Here, The Knot recaps the memorable moments as viewers continue to root for the season four participants.

Nick Pendergrast & Sonia Granados: Only two weeks into the experiment, Sonia is describing things as “a little weird” between she and her husband. “I’m not getting anything from him,” she says – clearly frustrated. “I’m just feeling like he’s closed off.”

As they are cleaning their new home, Nick shares with Married at First Sight viewers that he’s confident things will work out between them. But Sonia sleeps in the spare bedroom that night when Nick’s dogs invade the couple’s bed. “We need to communicate if this is going to work,” she tells producers.

When Married at First Sight expert, Dr. Pepper, visits the newlyweds, Sonia sits down with her first. She tells the sociologist that she would give her marriage a five out of ten. “I need something more,” she admits.

Sonia perceives caring as affection and touch, but she hasn’t told Nick for fear she’ll come across as a “nagging wife.” Dr. Pepper tells Sonia she has to tell her husband what she needs.

When it’s Nick’s turn to chat with the expert, he tells her he would give his marriage an eight or nine out of ten. Dr. Pepper finds his answer “interesting” after Sonia’s much lower score.

When the newlyweds talk with Dr. Pepper together, Nick agrees not to have his dogs in their bed at night. He shares that he’s open to change. The expert encourages them to find a physical way to say goodbye each morning and greet one another each night.

Nick’s mother and her boyfriend visit the couple and teach Sonia how to make Italian meatballs. Nick spends time alone with his mom’s beau while Sonia talks to her mother-in-law. After learning how closed off her son is with Sonia, Nick’s mom says she’ll talk to him.

As they eat the dinner they all prepared, Nick’s mom encourages him to be more open. But later, when Nick and Sonia are alone, they have another awkward moment. As they attempt to relax in the hammock in their yard, they share what they appreciate about each other. Sonia tells Nick she appreciates his sense of humor, and he appreciates her “ability to overlook [his] lack of communication.”

When Sonia asks Nick why he’s “so closed,” he tells her they haven’t had adequate time to develop their relationship. “I think you’re an awesome person, but am I in love with you? No,” Nick says, which immediately annoys his wife.

Sonia – obviously confused by her husband’s comment – gets up and walks away, leaving Nick irritated, too.

Tom Wilson & Lillian Vilchez: As they’re settling into their new home, Lillian’s sister calls to ask the couple to babysit Lillian’s niece. Although Tom is “not that stoked about it,” they agree to watch the little one. Lillian then expresses that she wants children down the road, but Tom doesn’t appear to be keen on the idea.

“We’ve known each other for two weeks,” he tells Lillian. “Talking about having kids with somebody you’ve known for two weeks is kinda weird.”

Lillian is bothered that Tom doesn’t have an “end goal” and that he’s content to take things day by day. She questions how committed her husband is, but when she tells him that him not wanting kids could be a “deal breaker” for her, Tom sees red flags.

When Dr. Pepper visits the couple, Tom admits that he doesn’t care for the phrase “deal breaker.” The expert encourages the couple to continue to build their marriage.

Later, when the newlyweds are preparing to babysit Lillian’s niece, Emma, Tom shares with Married at First Sight producers that he thinks “toddlers are a-holes.” But when Emma arrives, he’s a natural – joking around while playing air hockey and blowing bubbles with the little girl.

When Lillian’s sister returns, the ladies cook a meal together. Lillian is close with her family, and she loves that she can share that closeness with Tom.

That night, after having dinner with Lillian’s sister and niece, Tom and Lillian snuggle in bed and talk about their future.

Derek Schwartz & Heather Seidel: As they spend time apart to decide on the future of their marriage, Derek and Heather confide in friends. Heather talks with her friend, Amber, who tells her walking away from her marriage would show a lack of dedication and communication.

When Derek meets with Married at First Sight expert, Dr. Calvin, the newlywed shares that he sent a long text to Heather telling her he’s willing to listen to what her needs are. He thinks it’s “unfair” that Heather never responded. His fear is looking back and realizing they didn’t give their marriage a fair chance.

Heather then meets with Dr. Calvin alone. She tells him she has an issue with how Derek fights and his name-calling.

When they all meet together, Derek says he would prefer to stay married, but Heather still seems uncertain.

Sneak Peek: On the next episode, Lillian learns she needs surgery, and she worries how it will affect her marriage. Nick and Sonia have a tantra coaching session. Heather makes her decision.
