The Married at First Sight: The First Year couples are nearing their second anniversaries. They’re sharing their hopes and dreams for the future and reflecting on what they’ve been through. On the April 26 episode, entitled “Ghosts in the Closet,” one couple is focusing on finances while another is searching for spirits. Let’s take a look at the highlights as we anxiously await the May 3 Married at First Sight: The First Year season finale.
Doug Hehner and Jamie Otis: After her ex-boyfriend canceled their plans to meet prior to Jamie’s sister’s wedding, Jamie finally has all of the things she had left at his home. She tells Doug she’s ready to “move forward.” She apologizes for not being 100% into their marriage before. Doug appreciates his wife’s apology. They shoo their pups out of the bedroom for some “Mommy and Daddy time.”
Doug is looking forward to completing his “baby bucket list.” He takes Jamie on a ghost hunt, but she’s more than a little skeptical. She brings along cookie sheets to use as shields against the spirits. They meet a paranormal investigator at a former military prison. Jamie believes that Doug and the investigator are “crazy.” During the hunt, Doug says he has a ‘weight on his heart,” and he’s “really sad.” “I don’t know what, but something happened to me,” Doug admits after allegedly contacting a spirit. He thoroughly enjoys the ghost hunt and is glad they “got through it together.” Jamie is still not convinced. “The most peculiar thing happened today,” she tells Married at First Sight: The First Year viewers. “My husband and I grew really close after he got possessed by a spirit.”
Later in the episode, Doug is late coming home. He was supposed to pick the dogs up at the vet, and Jamie is beyond annoyed. “Where have you been?” Jamie asks Doug the moment he walks in the door. Doug doesn’t understand his wife’s reaction; she admits to feeling disrespected. “It’s like Jamie keeps a list to throw in my face,” Doug tells viewers. “We were doing so well, and now we just took two steps back.” Jamie explains that she doesn’t want to “raise a man-child.” She wants her husband to be her partner.
When the couple goes to therapy together, Doug shares that he feels Jamie is keeping a list of his wrong-doings. He doesn’t feel he’s been given the chance to prove himself to her. The therapist explains that Doug and Jamie are in an “unhealthy cycle,” but he believes there’s hope.
After their session, the couple goes out for drinks and dessert. “Be as patient with me as I was with you,” Doug suggests to his wife. Jamie is aware she is impatient, but she’s thankful they’re getting closer.
Jason Carrion and Cortney Hendrix: The dust has settled since Cortney threw her wedding ring down the kitchen drain. She video chats Dr. Pepper, the Married at First Sight: The First Year sociologist. “I don’t know how to deal with anger in a constructive way,” she admits to the expert. Dr. Pepper explains that a wedding ring is a “symbol of your commitment.” She says that “flushing it down the drain is kind of like flushing your marriage down the drain.”
Cortney tells Dr. Pepper that she knows she intentionally hurts Jason, but she doesn’t know why. The expert speculates that by arguing, they’re testing each other’s love. “Anger is about the issue at hand,” the doctor explains. “Rage comes from someplace deeper.” Cortney tells her the last thing she wants to be is “someone who bullies my husband.” Dr. Pepper encourages her to solve the issue before the couple has a child.
Jason sets an appointment with a financial planner, who explains that by not having separate bank accounts, “every purchase can become a debate.” When the planner asks the couple about their goals, it’s clear Jason and Cortney are not on the same page. They are encouraged to write down their financial goals.
When they get home, Cortney looks up homes in North Carolina. Jason looks up apartments in Brooklyn as a comparison. He tells his wife he is okay with saving money for a home in North Carolina. Cortney is thrilled, but for now they’re both happy with renting a bigger place in Brooklyn.
When the couple meets Jason’s sister and niece for a meal, the meeting goes well. Cortney hits it off with her sister-in-law – something she had been nervous about. “I can’t wait to spoil her rotten,” Jason says of his niece.
Later, Jason meets Neph to pick out a diamond ring for Cortney. He tells Neph about the drain incident. “I’m a little shocked that Cortney threw her ring down the drain,” Neph admits to Married at First Sight: The First Year viewers. “I wasn’t there, so I can’t pass judgment, but you might wanna take out insurance on this one,” he jokes.
Jason takes Cortney out for “date day,” to a “secret class.” When they arrive at a studio for a hula class, Cortney is surprised. “This is why I don’t like Jason to plan things for me,” she tells viewers. But Jason is a natural, and the newlyweds have a great time. At the end of the class, Jason tells Cortney he’s taking her to Hawaii for a second honeymoon. His mom had set money aside for Jason to “do something fun with,” before she passed away. “I couldn’t think of a better way than to have a second honeymoon,” Jason tells Married at First Sight: The First Year viewers. Cortney is thrilled by her husband’s sweet surprise.
Neph Rodriguez and Jasmine Gaona: After Neph purchased a home without Jasmine’s input, he’s ready to show her the house in-person. He leads her blindfolded, saying “This is our future home.” He carries Jasmine over the threshold saying, “Not too shabby, hey?” after taking off the blindfold. He shows her the walk-in closet – something she had told him she wanted. Jasmine appears to be impressed with the house.
When Jasmine realizes that Neph had bought cannolis – the very first thing she ever ate in New York City, she’s touched. The gesture makes her cry. Neph tells her he never meant to hurt her feelings, and they kiss.
Sneak Peek: On the season finale of Married at First Sight: The First Year, Doug and Jamie continue to work on Doug’s “baby bucket list,” and Jamie surprises Doug. Jason and Cortney take off to Hawaii, and Jason has more surprises in store.
