The Married at First Sight: The First Year couples have had an extraordinary two years together. Not only did they meet, marry, and honeymoon as perfect strangers; they managed to build real marriages while getting to know each other. With the help of the Married at First Sight experts, the couples continued to believe in the process. They’re now planning forever together – something many viewers predicted would never happen.
On the May 3 Married at First Sight: The First Year season 2 finale, entitled “Baby, Maybe?” one couple is taking their love to new heights while the other is enjoying a dream vacation. Now that the Married at First Sight: The First Year cameras have stopped rolling, let’s take a final look at the highlights of these couples we’ve grown to love.
Jason Carrion and Cortney Hendrix: After Jason surprised Cortney by announcing they were going to Hawaii, the couple is in awe as they take in the island. They’re both stunned when they find out they’re staying in the hotel’s presidential suite. It features seven balconies, an amazing view of the ocean, and many rooms – much bigger than their cramped New York City apartment.
Jason has never learned to swim, so Cortney is attempting to teach him. First he puts on a child’s inflatable frog float, giving Married at First Sight: The First Year viewers a chuckle. Next he dons a dolphin float, and Cortney is beside herself. She doesn’t know whether to be annoyed or to giggle at her husband.
On their first night in Hawaii, Jason and Cortney attend a Luau. Cortney tells viewers she’s holding onto anger and resentment, but she doesn’t want to ruin their evening. After having some drinks, the couple is asked to come onstage to dance. They have a wonderful time. But after the dance, Cortney is ready to talk and get everything “out in the open.”
Cortney tells Jason she resents him comparing her job to his. He apologizes, but he’s irritated when Cortney doesn’t accept his apology. Later they go to the beach to take part in ho’oponopono – an ancient Hawaiian tradition symbolizing “letting go.” Cortney wants to release the anger and resentment she has after throwing her wedding ring down the kitchen drain. They both apologize to one another and release flowers into the ocean, putting their issues to rest.
Later, Jason tells Cortney he’s going to workout. She stays in their hotel room to take a nap. In reality, Jason sets up a romantic scavenger hunt for his wife. The doorbell wakes Cortney from her nap, and she finds her first clue under the hotel room door. After getting ready for the evening, she leaves to find more clues. Her final clue leads her to a table set for two by the ocean. Flower petals in the sand spell, “Will you take my last name?” Jason gets down on one knee, repeating the unexpected question. Cortney is shocked and happy; of course she says “yes.”
“I remember the first thing you ever said to me was, “just breath,” Jason tells his wife. “I can’t think of taking another breath without you.”
Doug Hehner and Jamie Otis: Now that this couple is communicating more effectively, they’re ready to finish Doug’s “Baby Bucket List,” and Jamie has surprises in store. She is planning a safari-themed surprise birthday party for Doug.
Because Jamie has been willing to help Doug complete his list, the couple takes an aerial yoga class – something Jamie has been wanting to do. It appears to bring them closer together, so much so in fact, that Jamie agrees to go sky-diving with Doug – another item on his list.
“Most women just get pregnant,” Jamie tells Married at First Sight: The First Year viewers, “but I have to jump out of a plan before that happens. Although they jump from the airplane separately, they look for each other in the air. When they land, they’re both exhilarated.
Jamie pulls-off the perfect birthday surprise. Doug is shocked when he learns his wife has also planned a surprise vacation. They’re going on an African safari, which is a dream of Doug’s. “I have never gotten a gift that I cared so much about,” he says. He’s thrilled with his gifts, and we can’t help but wonder… could babies be next for this couple?
Neph Rodriguez and Jasmine Gaona: This couple is spending time with Neph’s family before they move into their new home. “It’s gonna be the first time that I’m living somewhere permanently and I’m not coming back,” Neph acknowledges. The celebration is bittersweet for the couple and Neph’s family. Jasmine thanks Neph’s mother for “making me feel like family since day one.” The couple is excited to start their new life in their new home.
We wish all the best to the Married at First Sight: The First Year couples! We’ve enjoyed the ride and can’t wait to see what your futures have in store.
