When Matthew McConaughey first met Camila Alves in 2006, the actor was immediately smitten. The story is well-known by now from when the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actor—then at the height of his singlehood—was partying on Sunset Boulevard when Alves walked into the room.
“I mean, the clock was ticking,” McConaughey told Cigar Aficionado in its new issue. “I was about to be 40 and my plan was to be married and have kids by that age.”
However, the Dallas Buyers Club actor wanted to avoid the pressure. “I didn’t want to play the game of starting to feel anxious because, with too much anxiety, you can’t find a mate,” he told the mag. “And then you make a hasty decision. I knew men who had made hasty decisions and women who had done the same thing. But at that point, I wasn’t hunting. And then this amazing woman walked across my field of vision and I thought, ‘Who is that?’ And it was Camila.”
In a previous interview with Esquire, McConaughey said he turned to his friends when he spotted Alves and said, “What is that?”
He then motioned from across the room for Alves to join him for a drink, but she simply smiled and walked over to her friends. McConaughey had one thought in mind at the time: “Boy, this isn’t the kind of girl you wave across the f—kin’ room at. Get your ass up and go over there.”
The pair started dating and on Christmas Day in 2011, the actor proposed in front of family members. “I remember her face. I remember this smile coming up from her feet. I remember her having to catch her breath,” he previously said. “And she didn’t say yes right away. And then the whole family was going, Jeezus, she’s gonna say no.“
The couple married in a backyard wedding in 2012. They now share three kids, daughter Vida, and sons Levi and Livingston.
