Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp are excited to say, “I do!” The pair confirmed rumors of engagement Thursday, November 8, in what might just be the sweetest, most unique Instagram engagement post ever.

“ENGAGED!” Ryan, 56, captioned a cartoon drawing of herself and Mellencamp, 67, with a tiny guitar in musician Mellencamp’s hands for good measure. Ryan’s own caricature is empty-handed, though the two cartoon characters are reaching out and touching fingers in the image.

The surprise announcement comes just hours after photos surfaced of Ryan walking around NYC Wednesday wearing what looked to be an engagement ring. (She was also spotted with a sparkler on that finger on Halloween.)

Ryan and Mellencamp have had quite the love story—fit for a romantic comedy, in fact—the pair first started dating back in 2010 but called it quits after five years. Mellencamp went on to date Christie Brinkley for a year, but that relationship ended as well. Then, in March of last year, he went on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show and implied that even if he wanted to, he couldn’t possibly have another shot at love with Ryan.

“Oh, women hate me,” he said. “I loved Meg Ryan. She hates me to death.” When asked what he meant by the negative comment, Mellencamp explained that he had a lot of growing up to do, still.

“I think it’s because I’m a child. I throw fits, I gripe, I complain,” he said. “I’m moody. Every bad thing that a fella can be, that’s me.”

Two months later, however, the pair was spotted together again, dining at the Art Cliff Diner in Martha’s Vineyard in May and seen strolling around NYC hand in hand.

Ryan was previously married to actor Dennis Quaid and has one son from that marriage, 25-year-old Jack. Mellencamp also has a son Hud from a previous relationship, his marriage to model Elaine Irwin. Last Christmas, the foursome spent Christmas Day together at a New York Knicks game.
