Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle endured more than one dress fitting ahead of her wedding to Prince Harry; In fact, she had nine. Markle’s dress designer Clare Waight Keller revealed the challenging process behind designing for the royal bride, though the former Suits star made it easy for the Givenchy artistic director to make clear-cut decisions.
“We quickly agreed on the perfect dress,” Waight Keller told Paris Match. “I wanted a modern and fresh silhouette while respecting her style.”
The British native is the first female artistic director of the famed French fashion house, a brand that was a favorite of the late Audrey Hepburn. “Meghan knew [exactly] what she wanted,” the designer said. “We first connected in January in search for the perfect dress.”
The end result was a simple and straightforward piece featuring a bateau neckline and a resplendent cathedral-length veil. The piece was symbolically embroidered with a flower representing each of the 53 countries in the Commonwealth.
In total, Markle had eight dress fittings. “We’re entering into history,” Waight Keller explained. “It is an immense honor to have worked closely with Meghan and to have lived by her side all these special moments.”
Harry, of course, had a glowing reaction to seeing his bride for the first time. He was also incredibly gracious to the designer for her work. “Prince Harry came to me and said, ‘Oh my God. Thank you. She is absolutely magnificent,’” Waight Keller concluded. “I am very proud. It’s a fairy tale. A dream come true.”
