Weddings are stressful, even for duchesses. Fans have speculated the validity of a report that Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton dealt with tension leading up to the royal wedding in May, an incident that supposedly left the Duchess of Cambridge in tears. On Wednesday, December 18, People reported the reason behind the clash.
“There was an argument between Meghan and Kate over the fit of Princess Charlotte’s dress,” a family friend told the magazine. “There were very few fittings for the bridesmaids. Everything was left to the last minute, and it was really stressful for everyone involved.”
Other stories have emerged about moments of tension leading up to the wedding day, including royal biographer Robert Jobson’s account of Prince Harry lashing out in one particular moment. It was reported that Queen Elizabeth did not agree with Markle’s initial tiara choice, prompting an eventual standoff between the groom and palace staffers. He supposedly yelled at the time, “What Meghan wants, Meghan gets!”
While the days before the wedding were tense (and rightfully so as the palace prepped for the wedding of the year), the actual affair itself on May 19, was more than lovely. Prince Charles walked the bride halfway down the aisle after her biological father, Thomas Markle, dealt with a health scare. Prince William beamed as he supported his younger brother as best man.

Middleton and Markle’s best friend Jessica Mulroney both helped usher the junior bridesmaids and page boys into St. George’s Chapel. According to multiple reports, Prince William was in high spirits and gave a hilarious speech at the wedding reception. A source told People that the Duchess of Cambridge was also in “great form” at the evening reception held at Frogmore House.
Weddings, overall, can create pockets of discomfort since there are many moving parts and managing expectations can be difficult–especially for royals.

Despite reports, the Cambridges and Sussexes will be spending Christmas together with the Queen before Harry and Meghan move to Windsor Castle next spring. The couple, who currently reside at Nottingham Cottage in Kensington Palace, is expecting their first child together.
