Classic, simple and incredibly elegant might be Meghan Markle’s ideal wedding dress style, according to a 2016 interview. Months before she even started dating Prince Harry, the Suits actress already had weddings on her mind due to a series plot twist that naturally involved her character getting married.
While Markle, 36, was heavily involved in the dress-selection process for her on-screen character, Rachel Zane, the star’s personal style preferences departed from the look that was featured on the legal drama.
“I have the luxury of wearing beautiful pieces of clothing every day for work, so my personal style—wedding or not—is very pared down and relaxed,” Markle told Glamour in early 2016. “Classic and simple is the name of the game, perhaps with a modern twist. I personally prefer wedding dresses that are whimsical or subtly romantic. Delphine Manivet and Christos Costarellos are faves of mine for their uniqueness and beauty. And I will always be a fan of Ellie Saab. J. Mendel is spectacular as well, especially for more structural designs.”
The star then revealed her favorite celeb wedding dress—“Carolyn Bessette Kennedy,” she replied. “Everything goals.”

The late Carolyn Bessette wore an incredibly simple-but-elegant gown custom designed by her good friend, designer Narciso Rodriguez, to her 1996 wedding. The Knot previously spoke to Kennedy family photographer Denis Reggie about capturing the intimate occasion on Cumberland Island off the coast of Georgia on the 20th anniversary of the late couple’s nuptials.
“To see Carolyn’s expression, his bride… She is as caught off-guard as I was as their photographer when he reached for her hand and brought it to his lips, as they’re walking out of that simple but elegant, rustic setting, where love was really at the forefront,” Reggie told The Knot of the occasion. “Not grandeur, not fanciness… This was just love, full on, and center. I think it exudes that from every aspect of the image.”
Markle, meanwhile, will wed Prince Harry in Spring 2018. Clarence House officially announced the couple’s engagement Monday, November 27, and hours later, the two stepped out for their first official photo call, followed by a sit-down interview.
“The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was confirmation to me that all the stars aligned and everything was perfect,” Harry told BBC News. “This beautiful woman fell and tripped [into my arms]. She’ll be unbelievably good at the job part of it, as well, [which] is a huge relief…”
