Imagine if one of your colleagues was dating British royalty. Meghan Markle’s Suits colleagues experienced just that when their co-star of several years started dating Prince Harry, grandson of Queen Elizabeth II.
While shooting scenes in Toronto, Markle would covertly meet Prince Harry in various pockets around the world, finally going public with their relationship at one of his polo matches. Their relationship continued to turn serious with Prince Harry releasing a strongly worded statement in defense of his girlfriend, and eventually, the couple went public with their engagement in November 2017.
In May 2018, the couple married at Windsor Castle before several of Markle’s co-stars including Sarah Rafferty and Gabriel Macht. Of course the USA Network legal drama featured a whole roster of actors, including Markle’s on-screen father Wendell Pierce. These observers knew Markle was falling in love with one particularly obvious hint: increased security.
“I actually didn’t believe it was real,” Pierce, who plays Robert Zane on the show, told Extra this week. “Then all of a sudden I turn around and there is this guy from MI-5 [British security service] on set every day.”
The other big indication was Markle’s overall attitude. “The one thing that was clear, she was extremely happy… she had a glow,” he continued. “I knew she was in love… With the whirlwind of publicity and the world of being a royal now, the one thing that’s constant is the fact that I know she loves him.”
Markle’s other colleagues have also opened up about the experience of watching the actress fall for a royal. For example, Rick Hoffman, who plays Louis Litt on the series, could hardly contain himself.
“I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me!’” Hoffman said in May on the Today show ahead of the royal wedding. “It was both of us in the trailer, like, ‘Oh, my God! You’re dating a prince!’ I was like, ‘Take it slow. Be careful. Don’t let him hurt you.’”
While shooting scenes, Markle and Pierce would sometimes discuss Prince Harry in code, even while shooting Mike Ross and Rachel Zane’s wedding scene in April 2017.
“We had a moment I cherish,” Pierce told The Telegraph last month. “I was sitting with Meghan in her wedding dress, as we waited for a set-up. We were alone. I said to her, ‘Your life is going to change. It’s going to be amazing but I want you to know that I’m your friend, and no matter where you are or what’s going on—if the fishbowl that you’re in ever starts getting to you—you can call me.’”
