Unannounced too! The Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle made an unexpected appearance Monday night at the British Fashion Awards—and for a sweet reason.
The expectant royal was on deck to present her wedding dress designer, Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy, with the British Womenswear Designer of the Year award, the highest honor within the category. Markle was joined by Gone Girl actress Rosamund Pike as she took to the stage as part of the surprise moment.
“It is such an honor to be here celebrating British fashion and British fashion designers in my new home of the U.K.,” Markle announced as she beamed and cradled her baby bump. The audience below, filled with some the industry’s finest, cheered in response as Keller warmly hugged the Duchess before delivering a heartfelt speech.
“This woman is so amazing,” the creative director of Givenchy noted. “I got to know Meghan on such a personal level. To have someone like that trust you on such a personal moment in their life… I can’t thank you enough because it was the most beautiful moment.”
The event took place at the Royal Albert Hall in Kensington, London. The guest of honor looked resplendent in a black one-shoulder floor length gown that draped over her growing baby belly.
Keller, of course, is the force behind Markle’s now historic wedding gown: a simple silk crepe gown featuring a bateau neckline, three-quarter sleeves, and a sculpted waist with a train comprised of triple silk organza.
