Meghan Markle was initially tight-lipped about her relationship with Prince Harry even to members of her inner circle. The Duchess of Sussex, who is days away from welcoming her first child with her husband, enjoyed a rather normal life—at least in celebrity world—prior to her relationship with the world’s most eligible royal.
At the time when the news broke in 2016, Markle had kept her soon-to-be, high-profile romance under locks from even her makeup artist Daniel Martin, who ended up creating the beauty look for the future Duchess on her wedding day.
“I met Meghan a little under a decade ago when Suits got picked up—she was doing her first round of upfronts, an event where TV shows try to appeal to advertisers,” Martin recalled in a new interview with Into the Gloss. “At the time, she didn’t have a publicist, so she personally reached out to my agent at The Wall Group. When I met her, it was just an instant connection. I knew what she wanted—it was one of those things where, she looked at herself in the mirror and was like, ‘Oh my God, this is what I always wanted, but I didn’t know how to get there.’ From that experience, we just kept in touch.”
The friendship grew as Markle expanded her now-defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig. “She asked me to contribute. She’s always working—she always has something to do,” he added. “We started working on The Tig together and it was fun and growing… and then one day I looked up and she was dating a prince!”
According to reports, Markle and Prince Harry first met through mutual friends. The person to help facilitate their first blind date is believed to be Ralph Lauren PR director Violet von Westenholz, who’s based in London and is well-placed in royal inner circles.
Martin, of course, was floored when he realized the veracity of the reports after news broke Markle and Harry were dating. “I was in Greece at the time, and my husband was like, ‘Your friend is on the paper,’” he added. “She was literally on the front page of every newspaper in Greece, but everything was in Greek, so I was like, ‘What is going on?’ I didn’t know!”
Like many members of Markle’s team, Martin was catapulted into the spotlight after creating a dewey wedding day beauty look for the Duchess for her Windsor wedding.
“We’ve known each other for so long and I knew exactly what she wanted, it was kind of a no-brainer the day of,” he previously told Vogue. “Because of Meghan, people are feeling comfortable in their own skin. They don’t need to wear so much make-up. After the wedding I had so many moms reach out to me through DM saying, ‘Thank you for showing my 14-year-old daughter that she doesn’t need to go to school with a full face of make-up’. I didn’t realize how much make-up the world was wearing!”
