By now, the tale of how Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher ended up together is well-known. However, That ‘70s Show fans still feel the fuzzies whenever either star recalls the beginning stages of their friendship turned romance.
The two had sustained a longtime platonic relationship after starring together on the show as teens, but it wasn’t until Kutcher had split from Demi Moore and Kunis was single after a longterm relationship with Macaulay Culkin that they even viewed each other in a romantic light.
Kunis has previously opened up about how Kutcher invited her to a house party with the original intent of setting her up with one of his friends. Instead, they ended up together at the end of the night—and eventually decided to keep the relationship casual.
“I did a movie called Friends With Benefits. He did a movie that was very similar called No Strings Attached. We lived our movies out,” Kunis said on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast this week. “We were like, ‘Let’s just hook up. Let’s have fun. We’re both single. We both trust each other. Everything’s great.’”
“None of us wanted tension,” she added. “We hooked up for three months.” Then, Kutcher told Kunis about someone he was dating.
“I felt like I got punched in the gut, literally overnight,” she continued. “He said something, and I was like, ‘Oh my God. I love this man. And I have to walk away because this is not the agreement that we had. So I’m going to speak up.’”
Kutcher must have been feeling the same way. After the actress told the actor that she cared for him and it was beginning to become too much, Kutcher agreed to let it go and they went their separate ways. “He was like, ‘Got it,’” she added. “And the next day, he showed up to my house and he was like, ‘Move in with me.’ And I said, OK.”
The couple married on the gated grounds of the Secret Garden at Parrish Ranch in California in July 2015. At the time, the parents of two had welcomed their daughter Wyatt, now almost 3, in the fall of 2014. They are also parents to Dimitri, now 2.
“If you’ve ever seen the National Lampoon movies, our honeymoon was like a real life National Lampoon’s honeymoon. I’m not exaggerating,” she told Jimmy Fallon on Monday night. “I’m not saying it for a laugh. We also honeymooned with my in-laws.”
Along with baby Wyatt and their in-laws, the pair took the RV to spots near Napa Valley. “Eight hours into this RV, our air conditioner breaks in Bakersfield at 110-degree weather,” she added to Fallon. “We almost died on the side of a road.”
Kutcher’s mother Diane assured the couple prior tot he trip that she would do the research and find scenic parks for the family to stay in. “She didn’t use the Internet. She used books,” Kunis joked. So somehow they ended up at a park “not in Napa, but an hour outside of Napa with two prisons.”
Despite the rocky trip, they’re still very much in love and still together. “That is where our RV trip ended. My husband looked at me and goes, ‘I quit,’ and I was like, ‘Me too,’” she said. “And that was our honeymoon and three years later, we really like each other.”
