Miley Cyrus’ new single “Malibu” has everything to do with Liam Hemsworth.
The singer, 24, revealed the cover artwork for her new track on Wednesday, May 10, and Hemsworth was actually the one to capture the gorgeous, sun-soaked accompanying image. “My new single #Malibu drops tomorrow!” the multi-hyphenate expressed on social media. “Tellllll everyone you know to check it out! In the ethereal snapshot, Cyrus reclines on a field of wildflowers and gazes lovingly into the camera lens. The actor did a beautiful job focusing on the singer’s bright blue eyes, and captured another interesting element from their relationship—her engagement ring. The multi-hyphenate made sure to tag and credit her fiancé too.
Just last week, Cyrus revealed in a no-holds-barred interview with Billboard that “Malibu” is actually about her relationship with Hemsworth. The former co-stars memorably broke off their engagement in 2013, only to reconcile in early 2016.
“They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam,” the former Disney Channel actress mused. “So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel.’”
Cyrus wrote the single in an Uber ride on the way to the set of NBC’s The Voice. “I drive myself everywhere, but that day I decided to Uber, and I was trying not to sing out loud because someone else was in the car,” she joked in the same interview.
“I needed to change so much,” Cyrus continued. “And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard. Suddenly you’re like, ‘I don’t recognize you anymore.’ We had to re-fall for each other.”
Cyrus and Hemsworth are particularly devoted to Malibu. Both own properties in the area.
