Opa, indeed! Two months after exchanging vows in Corfu, Greece, Million Dollar Listing New York’s Ryan Serhant and his wife, Emilia Bechrakis, are now sharing their wedding with the world. The couple’s Bravo television special entitled, Million Dollar Listing New York: Ryan’s Wedding, premieres Thursday, September 22, and the newlyweds spoke with The Knot about documenting their destination wedding experience.
Serhant, 32, had previously developed a reputation as a romantic. He memorably shut down Times Square when he proposed to Bechrakis back in September 2014. He then surprised his love — again! — when he spontaneously suggested they wed in Greece, where Bechrakis’ family is from.
Six years ago, Serhant signed on to star on Million Dollar Listing at a time when he was single and getting his career started. Since then, the Bravo star has grown accustomed to fans following both his professional and personal life. He explains that documenting the wedding and the events leading up to it seemed like “the natural thing to do.”
“When we’re 80 and we’re old and wrinkly and we have 62 grandkids running around, we’ll be able to watch this show,” he tells The Knot, “and not just a wedding videographer’s cut, but four episodes of our wedding, and see what it was like.”
Bechrakis admits that planning the wedding by phone had its drawbacks. Choosing a destination and locking down a wedding venue proved to be a difficult task. “The week of the wedding, everything that could go wrong, went wrong,” she says of that stressful time, “but it all comes out really beautifully in the end.”
Serhant and Bechrakis’ wedding guests weren’t aware of the “difficulty behind the scenes.” Thankfully, the couple had a skilled wedding planner to help them pull-off the fete. Celebrity wedding and event planner, Kevin Lee, “came highly recommended,” according to the groom.
Bechrakis opted for a Romona Keveza wedding dress for the lavish event. She loves the designer’s work and the fact that she’s New York-based.
Although the couple had a difficult time narrowing down the standout moments from their Greek wedding, jumping into a swimming pool with family members and friends post-ceremony was something Serhant will never forget. “It’s burned into my brain,” he tells us.
“We’d been drinking all day, it’s like 10 thousand degrees out, we’re in the middle of Greece,” the newlywed explains. “We had the reception around the pool at the villa that we rented and stayed in. It’s like the biggest pool you’ve ever seen.”
“Toward the end of the night, my two brothers and I decided it would be a good idea to dive into the pool with all our clothes on, and as I cane up for air, all I could see was bodies launching in after me. It was like this chain reaction that topped off the greatest night in the history of our lives,” Serhant shares with The Knot.
Although Bechrakis didn’t take the plunge (literally!), she remembers the moment as “pretty wild.”
They may have had setbacks leading up to their wedding, but looking back, it doesn’t seem that Bechrakis would change a thing. “It all makes sense,” she explains of her thoughts and feelings during and after the nuptials. “You feel so happy and so moved and emotional. You realize everything in the past doesn’t matter anymore. The stress and everything leading up to it just didn’t matter.”
Her husband seems to concur with Bechrakis’ thoughts. “It was so nice to be married and not [to be] getting married,” he acknowledges. “It felt good to be able to start real life.”
“In the blink of an eye I was Ryan, and now it’s Ryan and Emilia and our family,” he tells us. “Our next big life moment will be kid 1 of 12.
As for their upcoming television special, Serhant reveals that viewers will be surprised. “It’s very, very intense. It’s not what people expect,” he shares with The Knot. “It’s super dramatic, romantic comedy.”
Tune in to Million Dollar Listing New York: Ryan’s Wedding, premiering Sept. 22 at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.
