Party’s here! Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra married on Saturday, December 1, but one of the couple’s favorite nights from the whirlwind weekend was a pre-wedding festivity known as the Sangeet in Indian culture.

“It all began as a fierce song and dance competition between the families but ended, as always, as a huge celebration of love,” Chopra expressed Sunday, December 2, alongside a slideshow on Instagram.

It all began as a fierce song & dance competition between the families but ended, as always, as a huge celebration of love.  Nick and I were looking forward to the Sangeet (musical evening), another pre wedding ritual.. and to see what each side had put together. And what a performance it was. Each family telling our stories through song and dance, filled with lots of laughter and love. We were both filled with gratitude for the effort, the love and the laughter and will carry the memories of this special evening for the rest of our lives. It is an amazing start to a lifetime of togetherness for our families and friends…#grateful @nickjonas /: @calebjordanlee @josevilla @josephradhik

“Nick and I were looking forward to the Sangeet,” she added to her 31 million-plus global followers. “And what a performance it was. Each family telling our stories through song and dance, filled with lots of laughter and love.”

Those who partook in the Sangeet included Nick’s famous brothers, Chopra’s mom and the couple’s future in-law Sophie Turner, who’s engaged to Joe Jonas.

“The Sangeet is an all-out dance party,”  Shawna Gohel, Founder and CEO of Maharani Weddings, tells The Knot. “Traditionally, both sides of the family perform dances and song for the couple as a gift or a token to express appreciation.”

Most spectators will partake in the celebration. “All family members perform, starting with nieces and nephews, then cousins, siblings, parents and, finally, the bride and groom!” Gohel adds.

Chopra went with a stunning, sparkly saree by Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla for the Sangeet, while the groom chose a deep blue sherwani.

“We were both filled with gratitude for the effort, the love and the laughter and will carry the memories of this special evening for the rest of our lives,” Chopra concluded. “It is an amazing start to a lifetime together for our families and friends.”

Chopra and Jonas married December 1 at the Umaid Bhawan Palace. They started the wedding days with a formal Christian ceremony officiated by the father of the groom, followed by a Hindu wedding on Sunday.
