Strike three! Nick Viall is becoming an expert in heartbreak after going home solo following his split from Jen Saviano on the Bachelor in Paradise season three finale on Tuesday, September 6.
This time, however, was different for the two-time Bachelorette runner-up, as he was the one to break things off with Saviano. Although viewers of the ABC hit reality series knew ahead of Tuesday night’s episode that Viall would be the next Bachelor – and things had clearly not worked out for him in Paradise – the details of his split from Saviano remained a well-kept secret. Many viewers assumed that she had rejected Viall’s proposal, but as it turns out, he didn’t propose at all.
When Saviano professed her loved to him, Viall told her that she made him a better person but he couldn’t tell her he loved her.
“I feel like sometimes you wish you could tell your heart what to do,” he confessed, “and if I could, I would tell it to choose you. I just feel like… something’s telling me to say goodbye.”
After apologizing, Viall admitted that he was worried he may regret his decision. It seems his own insecurities may have played into his choice to break things off.
“I just feel like you deserve better than me,” he admitted to Saviano – leaving viewers wondering if he was feeling conflicted or simply lessening the blow.
Clearly stunned, Saviano didn’t have much to say after her beau’s rejection. She gave Viall a hug and allowed him to walk her to the car that would take her away from Paradise – and the man she dreamed would become her husband.
Their time in the sun may be over, but Viall has little time to recover from his latest breakup before moving onto the next stage of his quest to find true love. He’ll return as the next Bachelor in January 2017.
