Just popping in over here. Former president Barack Obama had a surprise in store for his wife, Michelle Obama, on their 25th wedding anniversary, despite being thousands of miles away. On Tuesday, October 3, the former first lady was honored as the keynote speaker at a women’s conference in Philadelphia. It was during an empowering sit-down chat with Shonda Rhimes that their conversation was paused for a quick video message from the 44th President of the United States.
“Hey, honey. Listen. I know you’re with all these important Pennsylvania women and you’re sharing the stage with our buddy Shonda Rhimes, but I had to crash this party because today we have been married for 25 years,” he expressed. “The idea that you would put up with me for a quarter of a century is a remarkable testament to what a saintly, wonderful, patient person you are.”
The couple, who first met while working together in a Chicago law firm—he was an associate and she was his advisor—married in Chicago on October 3, 1992. During the Obama administration’s two terms in the White House, the first lady embraced her role, advocating and programming around issues ranging from childhood health to education for young girls. Naturally, her husband had more to say about her efforts.
“It was a lot easier for me to do it, because the fact of the matter is—not only have you been an extraordinary partner, not only have you been a great friend, somebody who could always make me laugh, somebody who would always make sure that I was following what I thought was right, but you have also been an example to our daughters and to the entire country,” he said in the video. “Your strength, your grace, your determination, your honesty. The fact that you look so good doing all this… the way in which you’ve always taken responsibility for your own actions and also looking out for the people around you is remarkable.”
He added, “It’s no wonder that as people got to know you as I got to know you, they fell in love.”
The former commander in chief’s message came towards the tail end of her conversation with Rhimes, the creator of female-centric shows like Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy. “It is truly the best decision that I ever made to be persistent enough in asking you out for a date,” he concluded. “And you finally gave in. I hope you feel the same way.”
The mom of two, meanwhile, also shared an anniversary message for her husband on Tuesday morning. “Happy 25th anniversary @barackobama,” she wrote. “A quarter of a century later, you’re still my best friend & the most extraordinary man I know. I [love] you.”
