Ryan Lochte is a husband. The Olympic gold medalist secretly married fiancée Kayla Rae Reid this week in a courthouse wedding in Gainesville, Florida.
According to the marriage license obtained by TMZ on Friday, January 12, the couple quietly wed on Tuesday. The document reveals that the groom’s father, Steven Lochte, was there to support the pair as witness.
Lochte and Reid, a former Playmate, first met inside the VIP room of Hollywood hotspot Bootsy Bellows in January 2016. Eight months later, they were engaged. The Olympian proposed in October 2010, just as the sun set over Malibu Canyon. As part of the special moment, he treated Reid to a lavish helicopter ride. “Memories forever!!! #thelochtes #LA,” he shared at the time.
The athlete proposed with a 5-carat, rectangular, radiant-cut diamond designed by Bridal Rings Company’s proprietor Jay Hariz. “[Ryan] came to our showroom in the diamond district because we specialize in handcrafted diamond engagement rings and loose diamonds,” the jeweler previously told The Knot. “He had a very good idea of what ring style she likes, and he knew what shape and size diamond he wanted.”
The spouses share a baby son named Caiden Zane, who was born in June 2017.
The secret wedding is surprising since Lochte previously said he had a stake in planning. “They always say like the wedding’s for the woman but you know, for me, I want to be a part of it,” Lochte previously told CBS News. “I want to help pick out the cake, pick out the flowers, settings, everything, so I want to be a big part of it.”
