Peace, love, and pride! Juliana Arroya – an emergency medical technician from the New York City Fire Department – got down on one knee and proposed to her partner, Erika Marrero, on Sunday, June 26.
Marrero – who is also an FDNY EMT – cried as Arroya got down on one knee. Both women were on-duty during PrideFest – New York City’s annual LGBT street fair. The newly-engaged couple were surrounded by cheering onlookers during the proposal.
Once Marrero recovered from her initial shock, she embraced her bride-to-be and gave her a kiss to seal the deal.
“I think that’s a yes,” a man yelled from the crowd as spectators rallied around the happy couple.
The pride celebration was the perfect opportunity for Arroya to ask for her partner’s hand in marriage. “The parade is monumental for us because of the Orlando shooting,” she said after the proposal. “We wanted to walk in the parade in honor of the 49 victims.”
“At the same time, I wanted to give Erika something positive to remember from the parade,” Arroya added. FDNY later posted the proposal video on their Facebook page – along with several photos of their brave men and women joining the NYC festivities.
This year’s PrideFest marked the celebration’s 23rd consecutive year. It will hold even more meaning for Arroya and Marrero now that they’re set to wed! See the proposal video above.
