We’re late, we’re late for a very important date! When Rafael and Natalia Kurzawa tasked photographer Jaroslaw Kozlowski with capturing their Alice in Wonderland-themed wedding, the shutterbug had no idea that the Lewis Carroll-inspired nuptials would be so “mad.” In an exclusive interview with The Knot, the professional photographer shares all the behind-the-scenes details about the vivid shoot, which he describes as “whimsical and unforgettable.”
“I met Rafael and Natalie three years ago,” Kozlowski tells The Knot. “We worked together on several photoshoots before. When I heard that I would be their wedding photographer, I knew it will be an enjoyable and meaningful experience for us.”
The pair married on April 30, in an intimate ceremony in Wroclaw, Poland, and held their reception at the Garden Room at the Art Hotel. “It’s a magical place,” says Kozlowski of the venue, which was transformed into the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.
The most important details from Lewis Carroll’s fantasy were brought to life during the ceremony and reception. The bride threw on black-and-white striped stockings and heart-shaped heels (the Queen of Hearts would approve!), while the groom embraced the theme in a vibrant blue suit and a Mad Hatter-inspired top hat.
Their beautiful outdoor venue featured a mix of decorative candle pillars and colorful flowers, decks of playing cards and books strewn about, and a gorgeous tea set. The tables for the guests were lined with mossy greens speckled with rich purple, pink and blue flowers and mismatched tea cups to set the mood.
The bride even created signs pointing “This Way” and “Wrong Way” to add a special element to the overall aesthetic and made sure to set a mirror, which was appropriately Through the Looking-Glass.
There was even an appearance made by Bobo, the couple’s white pet rabbit! “The day of the photo shoot Rafael said, ‘It is time to go down the rabbit hole,’ and their reactions turned to sheer excitement, as you can see in the photos,” Kozlowski told The Knot. The wedding photographer, who shared with us that the couple “couldn’t imagine [an] adventure in Wonderland without [the] White Rabbit character,” was “very surprised and happy that their pet rabbit joined in.”
“One of my favorite moments was when Rafael pulled a rabbit out of the hat, just like he was doing some magic trick,” says Kozlowski. “Luckily the Cheshire Cat did not make an appearance and cause a fuss… Or perhaps he did, and we just didn’t see him.”
From the decorative place settings to the ticking clocks, the photographer found it difficult to not get swept up in the theme. “I was invited into their extraordinary journey to capture the moments of their happiness, mood of love, the way they smiled next to each other and celebrated their whimsical and unforgettable tea party,” Kozlowski tells us. “Their Alice in Wonderland wedding theme is one of my favorite weddings. I feel like I have created something new and original with my photography at their wedding.”
The couple and their idea ended up inspiring Kozlowski to expand his craft. “I love to find the uniqueness in things and their idea of an Alice in Wonderland wedding theme was completely crazy and magical,” the photographer says. “Natalie is a crazy-talented stylist and makeup artist. It was a joy to work with her and photograph her vision. Wonderland came to life.”
He concludes, “I am honored that they chose me to capture such special moments.”
