Sara Trigero thought November 3 was going to be just another day of work at the preschool where she teaches in Reno. But unbeknownst to the 27-year-old Henderson, Nevada, native, it would prove to be one of the most memorable of her life.
Trigero tells The Knot that she was called into a “performance review” at her boss’ office at the Child and Family Research Center at the University of Nevada-Reno that day. When she left the office, she was met with an unusual sight: her coworkers and her 2 and 3-year-olds holding up a sign that read “Sara, Say Yes!”
Her now-fiancé, Dallin Knecht, was right behind her, down on one knee with an important question to ask.
“Honestly, I was shocked!” she tells The Knot of the touching moment. “Even though we have talked about getting engaged and [being] married for awhile, I had never expected him to plan such an elaborate proposal. He knows how much I love the kids… so for him to incorporate [them] into the proposal is just a testament to how much he truly listens to me.”
Photographer Lauren Guffey and videographer Daijah Christmas were on hand to capture the precious proposal, and Trigero says she later found out that her co-teacher, Melissa Wolf Williams, was very involved with the planning.
“Dallin and my co-teacher Melissa had been planning this for weeks!” she says. “Without her, this proposal wouldn’t have been possible. I am so lucky to have such loving people in my life.”
Trigero and Knecht, 26, first met in Reno, where they were working at the same restaurant, and the future bride tells us she remembers knowing right from the start that this was the man for her.
“Our first date, we went out to dinner and then after dinner we stayed in front of my car and just talked for over two hours,” she says. “I knew there was something special even after the first date. In his proposal he said, ‘From our first date I knew that you were the girl I was going to marry,’ which was so sweet and honestly, I felt the same way. We clicked so well, I knew it was going to be something special.”
After the monumental proposal, Trigero says Knecht whispered in her ear, “You are my best friend, I love you so much,” to which she managed to eke out, “I love you so much thank you I love you I can’t believe this!”
Now that their story has gone viral—including a feature in the paper edition of the USA Today—the pair are just trying to keep their cool.
“We are just on cloud nine about being engaged and spending our lives together,” she says. “We are honestly shocked about all the internet attention we are getting! He knows how much I love the children I work with so it was a no brainer for him to incorporate the kids in our proposal. Dallin does not have any social media at all, we were not expecting anyone to ever know about our proposal! But I am not surprised that all of his planning has resulted in other people being interested in our story because he had such an incredibly adorable idea.”
