Total relationship goals. President Obama looked so in love with his wife, Michelle Obama, while greeting guests at a White House state dinner on Tuesday, August 2.
The formal event, which spotlighted the 50-year diplomatic relationship between the U.S. and Singapore, honored the prime minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, and his wife, Ho Ching.
“We’re bound together by history, by family and by friendship,” President Obama said at the meal. The sweetest moment from the evening, however, transpired outside of the White House as the Obamas ushered the Lees into their home.
The first lady — who looked resplendent in a white gown by American designer Brandon Maxwell — stood beside her enamored husband as they kicked off the special occasion. In numerous photos, the Commander in Chief gazed affectionately at his statuesque wife and even adorably signaled a thumbs up at one point to express his approval.
According to CBS News, the 200 guests situated in the East Room of the White House noshed on Wagyu beef, roasted yams, kale and heirloom carrots. They enjoyed their meal with California and New York red and white wines, as well a delicious peach sangria cake for dessert. Notable guests included FX stars Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell, Joy Luck Club author Amy Tan, and former Rep. Gabby Giffords.
The Obamas made a splash last week during the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, where both the first lady and president spoke in support of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
“I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves,” FLOTUS said during her speech. “And I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women, playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States. So, don’t let anyone ever tell you that this country isn’t great, that somehow we need to make it great again, because this right now is the greatest country on Earth.”
Following the rousing delivery, POTUS took to his Twitter to praise his wife. “Incredible speech by an incredible woman,” he wrote last Monday. “Couldn’t be more proud & our country has been blessed to have her as FLOTUS. I love you, Michelle.”
