Even Prince Harry and Meghan Markle didn’t anticipate where they would be exactly a year later when they announced their engagement on a sleepy Monday morning on November 27, 2017.

To kick off the week, the palace announced the couple’s engagement, which was followed by a flurry of activity, including an appearance by the future Duke and the Duchess of Sussex for their photocall in the gardens of Kensington Palace.

The two continued the day by giving a formal interview—their first joint sit-down as a couple—revealing everything from the royal’s romantic, private proposal in the comfort of his home to their future plans to expand their family.

Twelve months later, the two are now expecting their first child together due in the spring of 2019. Here’s what they said last November about having kids. When the couple was asked last fall about the prospect of having children, Prince Harry smiled and noted to BBC News, “Not currently, no.”

Of course the two wanted kids, especially so that Prince George, Princess Charlotte and recently-born Prince Louis would have cousins. “One step at a time,” Harry added. “And hopefully, we’ll start a family.”

In the same interview, the couple touched on Harry side of the family tree. “His family has been so welcoming–on both sides of the family. His mom’s side as well, which has been really good to me,” Markle said at the time. “We’ve had a really nice time getting to know them.”

Six months later, the dynamic duo married in a whimsical, personalized wedding at Windsor Castle. In October, just at the start of their royal tour in Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand, they announced they were expecting their first child together.

Now, months away from welcoming their baby, the couple announced over Thanksgiving weekend that they will be moving out of Nottingham Cottage (where the proposal took place) into Frogmore Cottage, which features more bedrooms and increased privacy under the security protection of Windsor Castle.
