Nick Jonas is in-law approved. The pop singer and his fiancée, Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra, officially took the next step in their relationship this weekend with a traditional Roka ceremony in Mumbai, India, where Jonas and his parents finally met Chopra’s side of the family.

The families exchanged gifts for the pre-engagement ceremony, which is intended to bring both sides together as part of tradition. Jonas and Chopra quietly got engaged this summer, but the Roka was considered a formal step for the to-be-weds and the family. Chopra’s mother, Madhu Chopra, opened up to DNA about the Roka and the next stages in the wedding planning process.

“I definitely want a traditional Indian wedding,” she said this week. “That’s my only wish. I started the Roka with a puja [a worship ritual], which is important to me. I’m a modern mother but at heart, I’m quite conservative.”

Typically during a Roka, a Hindu priest looks for auspicious match dates for the future wedding. However, the couple will prolong the engagement period due to other commitments. “They haven’t decided on a wedding date yet. It’s too soon,” Priyanka’s mother added. “Both of them have work commitments right now which they need to finish. They will take some time to decide where they want it and when they want it.”

Prayer, family and loved ones as the foundation to this new chapter.

The priest who was tasked with the ritual at the ceremony for the stars confirmed that he had performed the prayer ritual for the pair. The engagement ceremony followed.

“Nick enjoyed the prayers during the puja,” Madhu added Wednesday. “It was a new thing for him and he took it seriously. He followed what our panditji said, and chanted the Sanskrit mantras accurately. Both he and his parents did it beautifully. They are nice people.”

Overall, the Chopra family is fond of the new addition to their brood. “Nick is calm and mature,” his future mother-in-law concluded. “He’s a wonderful person and everyone in the family just loves him. He’s so polite and respectful towards elders. What more can a mother want?”

The couple confirmed their engagement early Saturday, August 18. “Future Mrs. Jonas,” the former Disney actor wrote. “My heart. My love.”
