Though they’ve been touted as the whirlwind romance of the summer, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s love story actually dates back to February 27, 2017—at the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party, to be exactly.

There, Jonas reveals in a new joint interview with Chopra for Vogue, he dropped to one knee at the sight of the Quantica actress in a black sequined Michael Kors dress.

“And I put my drink down,” he said, “get on one knee—this is in front of a bunch of people—and I say, “You’re real. Where have you been all of my life?’ Like, loud.” Chopra, who was on her way out of the event to catch a flight to India, told her manager, Anjula Ancharia, “Five minutes,” which turned out to be perhaps two of the most important words she could have uttered in that moment.

By that point, the pair had been texting for a few months after Jonas, 26, initiated contact via Twitter. (He confirms that he had sent a text to Chopra’s Quantico costar, Graham Rogers, that read, “Priyanka. Is. Wow.”

From there, he unabashedly sent a direct message to the 36-year-old Bollywood and Hollywood star, to which she responded that same day: “My team can read this. Why don’t you just text me.”

The pair began texting regularly, so by the time they met in person at the Vanity Fair party, Jonas was already pretty smitten. (His older brother, Joe, confirmed to Vogue that the youngest Jonas brother was indeed like a “little puppy dog.”)

Following their encounter at the Oscars afterparty, the pair had a string of dates: drinks at the Carlyle Hotel in NYC, followed by an hours-long hangout at Chopra’s apartment (her mother was there watching Law & Order in her nightgown); a theater date to the live performance of Beauty and the Beast; and a Dodgers game. The morning after the Dodgers date, Jonas called his mother to inform her that he was going to marry Chopra.

And the rest, as they say, is history. The pair got engaged in Crete in July, one day after Chopra’s birthday, and have been hastening to plan their nuptials ever since. They will have a three-day celebration capped off with two wedding ceremonies: one a traditional Indian wedding and another Christian ceremony officiated by Jonas’s father.

“It was such an incredible coming-together of two really ancient cultures and religions,” Chopra said of their roka ceremony this past summer. Added Jonas, “Two very different cultures and religious backgrounds, and the beauty of it was, there was so much love and acceptance for our side.”
