Jordan Spieth had one happy holiday. The professional golfer confirmed this week that he got engaged to his high school sweetheart, Annie Verret, over the holidays. “It was a fantastic year,” Spieth, 24, told the Associated Press on Tuesday.
However, his plan to propose was nearly foiled by a cold. “I had to have a backup plan,” he continued. “But I woke up and felt good that day and went through with it.”
A photo of Verret posing with her large diamond ring on Christmas circulated across the internet, sparking rumors of an engagement. According to the athlete, both his basketball pro brother Steven and Verret’s sister were on hand to celebrate.
“We had our families there afterward, and it was a great night,” he continued.
The two have been dating since they were in high school students in Dallas.
Spieth is currently one of the world’s top-ranked professional golfers. His fiancee, meanwhile, recently joined The Birthday Party Project as its development director. The organization, which was founded by a wedding planner, throws birthday parties for homeless children in cities across the United States.
