Rob Kardashian says his life took a positive turn after he fell for Blac Chyna. In a new People cover story, the 29-year-old reality star opens up about grappling with his personal demons and overcoming those struggles — with the help of his fiancee.
The couple, weeks away from welcoming their first child together (she has a son from her previous relationship with Tyga), discussed the journey to recovery in the tell-all interview. Along with the baby, the two are currently planning their wedding and starring on their very own E! reality docuseries, Rob & Chyna, premiering in September. Though the future looks bright for Kris Jenner’s only son, the situation looked grim a year ago.
Since 2013, Rob has dealt with a substantial weight gain, big health concerns, and backlash from his family concerning his surprise engagement to Chyna – who has helped him through it all. “She got me through my darkest times,” Kardashian revealed to the magazine. “I wasn’t happy in my own skin. I missed out on so many things.”
She took the time to listen to his cries for help. “I’ve been friends with Chyna for a long time,” he added. “She was someone I reached out to for advice. She would cook for me and we’d just talk. She’s surrounded me with a lot of positivity. From the moment we met, I knew I wanted to be more than friends.”
Chyna had no intention of altering her husband-to-be, but she knew he was ready to make positive changes. “I saw Rob was willing to better himself,” she told People. “I had never wanted to be tough. I never wanted to change him.”
Rob chimed in, admitting that being with Chyna motivates him. “Being with her got me over the insecurity of being out in public,” he shared.
He isn’t the only one in the relationship to struggle. In a new interview with Elle, Chyna revealed that she paid her college tuition by working in local strip clubs and earned enough money to pay for her degree before the age of 20. Unfortunately, it was too much for the future Kardashian (nee Angela White). When she began “falling asleep all the time in class,” she had to make a decision. She dropped out of college and pursued stripping and modeling full-time.
Since then, the 28-year old has become a successful entrepreneur, and she knows good things are on the horizon for her beau as well. As Kardashian continues to better himself, Chyna is right beside him.
“When I’m around Rob, I’m never all up in his business, asking questions,” she told Elle. “I let him be himself and relax.”
“I’m not a therapist. If he opens up, and I say the wrong thing, he may shut me out,” she admitted. “Sometimes it’s just best to let people talk about it and get it off their chest. That’s how I’ve been carrying the situation with me and Rob, and so far it’s worked out.”
The expectant father acknowledged that he’s still a work in progress, but he’s doing the best he can. “We just want to live our lives the way we want to,” he concluded to People. “There were definitely dark days for me, and I’m still not fully happy looking at myself in the mirror. But I’m working towards that. And I’m happy.”
