The power of love lives on, according to the Most High Rev. Michael Curry, one of the bishops who famously spoke at the 2018 Royal Wedding between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Curry opened up in a new interview on Thursday, June 21, about the tremendous reaction to his uplifting sermon before millions of people around the world.
“It was a real blessing to be a part of that,” he told Us Weekly of the biggest society of event of the year. “Because what they did, you could see it. They actually love each other. They really do. They look at each other like they love each other.”
In fact, Bishop Curry was so moved that he even had a moment of reflection later. “I remember thinking after the sermon, once I preached the sermon, I said, ‘These two people love each other,’” he recalled. “They look at each other, and their love brought the rest of us together.” Indeed, at one point during the ceremony, Prince Harry looked over to his bride and said, “You look amazing.”
During the delivery of his message, Bishop Curry recalled how he felt very much at ease as he spoke directly to the couple. “I’ve probably done hundreds of weddings, and it became they were a couple who had their family there and friends and a couple billion other people,” he added. “I basically turned into a parish priest again and talked to them like I’d talk to any other couple.”
Reverend Curry’s 14-minute sermon inside St. George’s Chapel subsequently went viral as the couple’s 600 guests and the estimated live viewers tuned in from around the world. “I did provide a copy of the manuscript about a week before I think it was, and I only deviated slightly,” he previously told Good Morning America in the days following the wedding. “I mean, you can’t get a preacher—you’re going to deviate a little bit. But they were basically aware of the basic outline and what was in it. They were very gracious.”
Given the magnitude of the relationship and the amount of attention that the couple now faces daily, Bishop Curry now has a few additional words of advice for the newlyweds. (The pair just celebrated their one-month anniversary at the Royal Ascot on Monday.)
“The truth is, if you’re involved in the work of trying to make a better world, you need a relationship with a power greater than yourself in order to help you do that, because you’re going to try to change the world and to change lives,” he noted. “You’re going to encounter resistance. It’s not going to be easy. It doesn’t happen overnight, and the truth is, you need a God behind you, because the resistance ahead of you is going to be real. Finding ways to cultivate a spiritual life that informs and enables your life of service, that’s what makes it possible.”
