Surprise, he’s married! Homeland actor Rupert Friend and Paralympian Aimee Mullins took to Instagram this week to celebrate their one-month wedding anniversary, but unsuspecting fans were shocked to learn that they had married. The couple managed to keep quiet about their secret wedding on May 1 — until now, that is.
On June 1, the 34-year old actor could no longer conceal his excitement, and took to Instagram to mark the first 31 days of happily wedded bliss.
“Today is the one-month anniversary of being happily married to @AimeeMullins! #ilovemywife,” the British actor shared. The announcement was greeted by hundreds of congratulatory comments from surprised fans.
Mrs. Rupert Friend was equally eager to share the good news. Mullins, 39, posted a photo of her husband staring adoringly into her eyes. “Bliss. Officially,” she captioned the pic.

A little rain didn’t put a damper on the couple’s covert nuptials. Although Friend and Mullins planned to marry in a field, they moved the simple ceremony into a nearby compost shed. With only their reverend and a witness, the couple exchanged meaningful vows uniting them in marriage.
“Celebrating one beautiful month of being married to my best friend!” the new bride captioned a photo of the ceremony. “The 1st of May was a gorgeous rainy day with (The Most Reverend!) @eatkinsdiet as our Officiant (The Most Divine) @betonyvernon as our Witness… an elopement in the field got moved into the compost shed. Our kind of magical day.”
The venue may have been simple, but it made for a stunning setting. The vintage vibe Mullins had dreamed of pulling-off came to life on the couple’s wedding day.
“Our rainy day wedding in a magical hobbit-y compost shed,” she shared on Instagram. “Vintage silk and muddy booties, a bespoke suit for Rupert with a vibrant blue-purple lining, and champagne all around.” Her tea-length wedding dress and pink and green bouquet brightened up an otherwise dreary day.

Following the intimate ceremony, the newlyweds invited their officiant and witness along for a post-ceremony game of pool.
This was not the first time that Friend and Mullins have kept hush-hush about a big event in their lives. The couple, who got engaged in May 2014, managed to keep their engagement private until December 2014.
