Everyone knows that Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are really good together, but it turns out that the A-list spouses are actually great as a team. In a new interview with Mr. Porter, Reynolds opens up about how his wife encouraged him, in fact, to reconcile with his father several years ago when their relationship was previously fractured.
“My dad was a tough guy,” Reynolds shared of his father, who passed away in 2015 from Parkinson’s disease. “He was good in many ways as well, but he was tough on us. This is not meant to be some sob story—everyone carries their own bag of rocks around and I am no different in that regard—but growing up in my house, it was never relaxing or easy and I know that, throughout my life, I’ve dealt with anxiety in different ways.”
The star of Deadpool 2 explained how he grapples wth anxiousness—daily exercise and a drive to do more in his career. “I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, but anxiety is also a great fuel,” he added. “I mean, my God, it’s the anti-complacency pill, but it’s also something that you need to manage.”
In 2012, Reynolds and Lively quietly married in South Carolina. It was the Gossip Girl star who encouraged her husband to reconcile with his father leading up to his passing. “She has a gift for foresight,” Reynolds recalled.
The couple welcomed their first child, a baby girl, in December 2014. They named her “James” after the actor’s father, Jim. “It felt right,” Reynolds said. “All family relationships come with some complications. For better or worse, all roads lead to here. At the end of the day, it’s easier to focus on the good stuff than the bad. My father died soon after my daughter was born, but he got to see her, which makes me happy.”
Lively and Reynolds welcomed their second baby girl in 2016. “I love being a dad,” he added. “It’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”
