Sarah Jessica Parker went the nontraditional route by donning a black wedding dress when she married Matthew Broderick back in 1997. In a new interview with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens: Live, the award-winning actress revealed why she regrets wearing the unconventional gown.
“Oh, I wish it was because I was badass,” the mother of three, 51, said after the Bravo host praised her for unorthodox choice to wear black. “I just was too embarrassed to spend any time looking for a wedding dress. There was a store that I liked that I knew, and I just went and got whatever they had hanging.”
Though Cohen continued to applaud Parker for her unique wedding day style, the Divorce actress quickly admitted, “No, I would do it differently.”
Now, nearly 20 years after exchanging vows with her famous spouse, Parker is casting those old regrets aside and making new memories. The Sex and the City alum recently took her teenage son James to a Kanye West concert in Madison Square Garden in NYC. At the mega venue, Parker and her son were given backstage access — thanks to Kim Kardashian.
“She’s a lovely person,” Parker said of the rapper’s wife. “I found Kanye to be incredibly warm.”
SJP’s new HBO series may focus on a woman dissatisfied in her marriage, but she seems to find no parallels between her on-screen role and real-life union. “It feels so separate that it doesn’t require comparison or a sigh of relief,” Parker said in a separate red carpet interview when asked if she’s relieved to go home to Broderick after a day of shooting. “When you’re an actor, I think, you don’t always have to use your own life to inform or look for relief.”
Broderick, 54, who accompanied his wife to the New York City premiere of her new show, shared what he’s learned in nearly two decades of marriage. “Communicating,” he said. “Don’t go to bed mad… It seems to work.”
The famous couple will celebrate 20 years of marriage on May 19, 2017.
