The surprise of the season! Serena Williams is engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, the tennis champion announced on Thursday, December 29.
Williams, 35, fittingly took to Reddit to announce her joyous engagement news a few days after Christmas, detailing the romantic way her future husband proposed.
“I came home. A little late. Someone had a bag packed for me. And a carriage waited. Destination: Rome,” the world’s top ranked women’s tennis player shared in a poetic post. “To escort me to my very own ‘charming.’ Back to where our stars first collided. And now it was full circle. At the same table we first met by chance.”
Their story, of course, had a beautiful ending. “But by choice. Down on knee. He said 4 words. And I said yes,” she concluded.
Her future husband, 33, shared the poem and added on his Facebook page, “She said yes.” On Reddit, he commented underneath his fiancee’s post and wrote: “And you made me the happiest man on the planet.”
The news comes as a complete surprise for many as the low-key couple concealed their relationship from the public. The pair hinted at their whirlwind romance last month when Williams discreetly posted a photo of herself dressed in coordinating costumes with the tech guru.
Williams alluded to her future aspirations in an interview with Self in its September 2016 issue. “In five years, I’m on a boat or an island, sketching the latest collection. Maybe there’s a baby, maybe a couple, we’ll see. I’m done traveling–I’m throwing away my passport,” she said. “Yeah, I’m done with it.”
For now, the tennis superstar said her focus is on winning. “This is my heart,” she expressed. “This is my blood. I live for this and have for the last 32 years. When I step out on the court, you’re going to get all of me.”
