It’s been a long time coming. Serena Williams finally was able to get a taste of her wedding cake five months after she married Alexis Ohanian during the couple’s annual “Selexis Day” celebration. And judging from the tennis champion’s high praise on Instagram, the dessert was well worth the wait.

“Once a year @alexisohanian and I have what we call Selexis day,” she explained in an Instagram caption of a photo of the couple devouring some cake. “It can fall on any day out of the year. This year was my year to plan it and I decided to surprise Alexis [by] bringing all his good childhood and young adult friends to the @PUBLIChotels.”

“His day started with a scavenger hunt with clues from @ladyjcreative and ended with live band karaoke from the amazing @arleneskaraoke,” she continued. “I have to say talking to them I learned a lot more about him.”

Williams then ended her post with an interesting tidbit about her own wedding day. “Fun fact,” she mused. “at our wedding we forgot to eat cake so [our] wedding cake designer @everythinglulu made us a replicate cake! We finally got to eat our wedding cake!!! Love you Lex and thanks @jzevents for always making my visions come true.”

Williams, 36, and Ohanian, 35, got married in a fun-filled wedding weekend in New Orleans back in November, but it’s no wonder that the high-profile couple didn’t get a chance to sit down, have their cake and eat it too.

Based on photos from the wedding shared exclusively with Vogue, the couple had a grand time dancing the night away with their guests, including Eva Longoria, Colton Haynes and Lala Anthony, and even had doughnuts drop down from the ceiling during the afterparty (swoon!). The dinner itself was also an elaborate affair, with three different cuisines to keep everyone’s energy up throughout the night.

The pair, who first met during a chance meeting in Rome in May 2015, share a daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.

Prior to the wedding Williams told Australian TV show The Project that she enjoyed the planning process. “I do event planning all the time, actually,” she said at the time. “I do events every year. I do everything from the food to the looks to everything. I think, in a different life, I was a wedding planner. Or just an event planner.”

As for advice she might have for her friend—and soon-to-be-bride—Meghan Markle, Williams recently told Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts that it’s important to be fully present on the big day.

“I just think it’s so important to enjoy the moment. And eat the cake―I didn’t get to eat mine at [my] wedding,” she said. “We were just having so much fun!”
