It’s been an eventful 2017 so far for Abby Wambach, who announced this weekend that she’s engaged to Christian mom blogger Glennon Doyle Melton.
Melton, who runs a blog entitled Momastery, was first to reveal the news on social media. The blogger posted a pic of herself holding hands with the U.S. soccer player—both wearing large rings on their left hands. “Abby and I have decided to hold hands forever,” she announced. “Love Wins.”
The soccer player then shared the same photo on Instagram and added: “Happy. #iseethemoonnow.”
Wambach and her fiancee’s story generated headlines in November 2016, after the popular Christian mom blogger announced that they were together. Melton, at that point, had just divorced her husband of 14 years. At the same time, Wambach revealed that she was leaving her wife, Sarah Huffman. (Wambach was arrested for a DUI last April and detailed marital and substance abuse struggles in her memoir, Forward.)
“Feels like the world could use all the love it can get right now. So today, I’m going to share with you my new love,” Melton wrote at the time on Facebook. “Her name is Abby. You might recognize her from soccer. She was one of the best players of all time, and she has been a fierce and committed advocate for women’s equality for a decade. And honestly? Those are the least impressive things about her. Abby is deeply sensitive and kind. The kids call her an M&M because she looks tough on the outside but inside she’s really mushy and sweet. Abby’s brave. Not just with her words but with her entire being. She has never been afraid to be herself, even when the world told her not to be. I learn from her everyday about the woman I want to become. She is committed to her friends and family. She has this sense of country and honor and chivalry that feels beautiful to me. She cares about the vulnerable- children and animals especially. She’s unwaveringly good to Craig, to the kids, to Sister and to all my people. And oh my God, she is so good to me. She loves me for all the things I’ve always wanted to be loved for. She’s just my favorite. My person.”
Prior to the engagement announcement, the two-time Olympic gold medalist posted a selfie with Melton on Instagram. “I actually don’t mind traveling when I’m with my girl. I am so lucky. Like for reals. That’s all,” she wrote.
A week before her engagement, Melton posted a similar photo on Instagram. “And then one day it all makes sense. Every bit of it. And you can finally see your past as one long, blessed road leading you home. And you understand that every bit of it was necessary and that every bit of it was holy. Thank you for being my home @abbywambach . I love us.”
