Derek Piquette, a top 10 dancer on So You Think You Can Dance season 12 just got engaged to his boyfriend Mitchell Jackson in the most romantic of locations – Paris, France! Derek and Mitchell exclusively shared their story with The Knot, so take a peek at their beautiful Paris engagement photos below and see how the SYTYCD star’s romantic proposal came to be!

It was on December 31, 2015, New Year’s Eve, that Mitchell proposed to Derek in Paris. Mitchell shared with The Knot he had been planning the proposal since May but had to find some clever ways to make his international engagement ideas come true without ruining the surprise.

“I knew I wanted to do it in Paris so I decided to give Derek that as his birthday present to make it less suspicious,” Mitchell explained. “After that I started designing his ring. After a month of a few adjustments I finally made the perfect ring for Derek.”

To continue to keep suspicions at bay, Mitchell tells The Knot that he got his best friend to find Portuguese photographer Gonçalo Silva for Flytographer and gift the couple a photo shoot in Paris as a Christmas present. For all Derek knew, Gonçalo was just there to capture their Parisian New Year’s moments non-selfie style!

“Derek had no clue,” Mitchell tells The Knot, “but once we got to the shoot after the third shot I got down on one knee and proposed. After that we had the whole day planned out in Paris. It was a perfect New Years Eve.”

“First he knelt down…” Derek captioned his New Year’s Eve Instagram photo, revealing their engagement to his SYTYCD fans. Gonçalo perfectly framed the pair, capturing Mitchell proposing on La Pont Alexandre “The New Bridge,” stealing the attention away from the Eiffel Tower standing in the distance.

…then I said YES!

“… then I said YES!” Derek finished up the set of Paris proposal pictures by sharing a photo of the two stealing a kiss. In the photo Derek shows off his beautiful diamond engagement ring with over 3 carats of diamonds and white gold band that Mitchell had custom made just for him!

“In the moment I couldn’t say anything but ‘Oh My God’ while tears filled up my eyes,” Derek tells The Knot. “I had been joking around about wanting to get engaged practically since we met, so now that it was actually happening I couldn’t believe it.”

Though it was love at first sight for SYTYCD’s Derek, Mitchell needed a little bit more time to realize what was in front of him. The two met when Derek was asked to be a principle dancer alongside Mitchell’s best friend at a company show presented by the Bridge To Artist Dance Company in Toronto, Derek tells The Knot.

“After the show we were introduced and Mitchell actually was not interested… at all,” Derek explained, but only a few nights later they were brought together again at another event. “This time he actually had a conversation with me and I got him to give me his number.”

With Derek moving on to teach workshop classes in Detroit a week later, something told Mitchell that he needed to be there with him. “After talking for that week, he decided to drive straight from work, the 4 hours just to take me out to dinner and then drive 4 hours back to basically go straight back to work,” Derek shared with The Knot. “He said he didn’t know why but he felt like he had to come see me.”

“About two weeks after that I went back to Toronto to stay with him and perform in his company, On The Floor [for the] Gala Night for SickKids Hospital [The Hospital for Sick Children],” Derek shared with The Knot. “During that week we fell head over heels for each other.”

Spending just one more week apart the SYTYCD top 10 performer said, “we both didn’t like doing the whole ‘long distance’ thing, so the next week I decided to move in with him. We’ve lived together ever since and its been the happiest year and half of our lives.” What a story!

In one more stunning image from Gonçalo that Mitchell shared on Instagram, Mitchell smiles at the camera while Derek kisses him on the cheek. With Derek’s arms wrapped around his new fiance the gorgeous engagement ring shines in the light. Mitchell captioned the photo, “One of my fav pics from our shoot in Paris!” Definitely one of the best trips of my life.”

Though the SYTYCD star still seems in shock after his surprise Paris engagement – recently tweeting, “I’m actually engaged!!?!” – Derek tells The Knot, “I have never had any doubts since the day I met him, that I would be with him for the rest of my life, and now I get to be.”

The choreography-driven couple have plenty of time to firm up wedding plans, but shared with The Knot, “We are hoping to do it in a Vineyard in Niagara in the summer of 2017.” In the meantime Derek can be seen performing on the 2015 SYTYCD Dance Tour while Mitchell is busy creating and managing his new dance company and competition “On The Floor.”

Thank you for sharing your beautiful Paris engagement and inspiring love story with The Knot, and congratulations you two!
