The wedding present to top all wedding presents! When Alexas “Lexi” Gonzales and Brittany Lewis exchanged vows on January 12, after more than nine years together, they were overcome with joy for a multitude of reasons—not least of which was the fact that Taylor Swift herself had sent them a congratulatory gift.
“It all started when Brittany started emailing seven of Taylor’s team members every day since the beginning of December,” Gonzales tells The Knot. “[She would] just explain how ‘Love Story’ has been such a big part of our own love story.”
Swift’s 2008 hit debuted when the pair were dating in high school, and it quickly became an important part of their relationship (“‘Love Story’ plays out like our own little love story!” Gonzales says). It was such an integral part of their romance, in fact, that Lewis used a line from the song when she popped the question in November 2016. “Brittany proposed and used the best line of all at the end of the proposal,” Gonzales says. “She said, ‘I talked to your dad now go pick out a white dress.’ Also, once they announced us… and we were walking out of the reception, that was the song we chose to play!”
But after reaching out in December, Lewis never heard anything back and assumed that her efforts to reach Swift unfortunately hadn’t worked. Which is why, on their wedding day, both Lewis and Gonzales received the biggest surprise: a bouquet of beautiful white flowers and a card from the singer herself.
“You have no idea how honored I am that ‘Love Story’ has been such a big part of your beautiful love story,” Swift wrote in a note that Gonzales shared to Twitter. “I’m absolutely thrilled that Lexi said YES! Have the most magical wedding day and hopefully I can meet you both soon! Love, Taylor.”
“Neither one of us expected anything,” Gonzales says. “I had no idea Brittany was even emailing Taylor’s team and Brittany said it was a shot in the dark, but she wanted to try! … We couldn’t believe it at all. I think we are still in shock and can’t believe it, I mean honestly, it’s hard to believe that Taylor Swift sent flowers and a cute note to us! We are nobody special.”
“Her card is something we will cherish forever and it’s something we will be able to show our kids one day,” Gonzales says, adding, “The note it is already framed and sitting on our entertainment center.”
Of their “new chapter” of life together as newlyweds, Gonzales says she and Lewis “just want to travel as much as” they can and then eventually try to have a baby. “We just want to see the world a little bit and do things we’ve never done before I start trying to get pregnant!”
This isn’t the first time that Swift has surprised her fans with flowers and a note either. Last May, she sent some blooms and a sweet note to a fan for her graduation day, and in June 2016, she crashed a fan’s wedding to perform a stripped-down version of “Blank Space.”
