Vanderpump Rules stars Tom Schwartz and Katie Maloney recreated a classic and hilarious kiss from the iconic coming-of-age movie The Sandlot for their engagement photo shoot. Photographer Courtney Berman exclusively shared with The Knot what it was like capturing the cinematic moments with Schwartz and Maloney, and offered a first look at their spot-on Sandlot engagement photos!
Though Schwartz proposed to Maloney with a 2-carat pear shaped champagne diamond engagement ring on July 7, 2015, their proposal hadn’t aired on Vanderpump Rules until the January 4, 2016 episode. The couple since stepped into the sun on a California beach, celebrating their engagement by recreating the 90s baseball comedy scene.
The Sandlot, which celebrated its 20th anniversary just a few years ago, contains unforgettable characters Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry), Benjamin “Benny” Franklin Rodriguez (Mike Vitar), Mr. Mertle (James Earl Jones), The Beast, and of course the four-eyed trickster Michael “Squints” Palledorous, to name a few.
In the movie, Squints (Chauncey Leopardi) – and everyone else – has a crush on lifeguard Wendy Peffercorn (Marley Shelton) and he fakes drowning so she’ll give him CPR. For their engagement photo shoot, Maloney and Schwartz were the embodiment of the lip-locking lifeguard and her “rescue,” right down to each characters’ signature spectacles!
“When Katie initially asked me to do the shoot I was very flattered. Engagement and wedding photos are the ones that are hung in people’s homes forever so to be the person that they wanted to take them was really special,” Berman told The Knot. “Then when she told me she wanted to emulate the movie , I was beyond excited. It’s one of my favorite movies and I thought it was such an original idea.”
In the midst of the mouth-to-mouth resuscitation Squints “regains consciousness” revealing the hoax to his friends before smooching Wendy back, and Schwartz and Maloney captured this Sandlot scene perfectly with the groom-to-be cheesing for the camera as his faux lifeguard fiancee listens for a heartbeat.
“I have worked with Tom and Katie several times on photoshoots and it is always a blast. The two of them have such great energy and so much chemistry. Not to mention they are both gorgeous so it makes my job easy.” Berman said.
Despite sharing with The Knot that Schwartz was “reluctant to do the shoot because he’s not a fan of engagement photos in general,” the photographer added, “The mood of that shoot was sort of funny,” and he ended up loving the photos. But who couldn’t love this spot-on tribute to 1960s-in-the-1990s nostalgia?
It was the bride-to-be who came up with the idea and took the reigns in the movie makeover, but she had some help from her fiance and photographer. “As far as posing goes, we all sort of collaborated on it. We had a general idea of what shots we needed to get and then just made little tweaks to create a better composition or a more flattering pose for a photograph,” Berman said. “I didn’t really need to give Katie or Tom any advice on what to wear since Katie is a very fashionable person and this was her idea.”
The multi-faceted photographer Berman did have some advice to share saying, “If any couples want to recreate movies or scenes for their engagement photos, I would tell them to really do your homework. Watch the movie or scene several times and make sure you have all of your props, wardrobe, hair and makeup ahead of time.”
She added that for tricky on-location shoots, like in front of the Goonies house for instance, “Scout your location and check to see if you need a permit to shoot there so you don’t get shut down in the middle.” But most importantly Berman said, “Have fun! That’s the whole point of doing something creative, isn’t it?” We couldn’t agree more, and these Sandlot engagement photos from Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz are pure fun!
