This wedding was llama-tastic! When Drew Kluger and Alexis Wilson-Kluger started their wedding planning process, they had no idea they’d be sharing their hotel with a herd of adorable llamas! In an exclusive new interview with The Knot, the newlyweds share their unique wedding story and charming photos with their four-legged guests.
The bride and groom exchanged vows this past March at The Chapel at The Cliffs on Glassy Mountain in South Carolina. Following the ceremony, they made their way to the reception — but the real fun didn’t begin until everyone returned to the hotel.
Members of The Southern States Llama Association–along with their darling llamas–were staying at the hotel for a nearby convention. The bride, 32, and groom, 33, weren’t informed about the llama convention until after they’d booked their rooms. “They told us that a llama convention would be there after our original booking,” Drew tells The Knot. “We called to see if we could block more rooms, and they said the llama club already booked the rest of the hotel.”
Their reactions? “We had a mixed surprised, excited, and nervous feeling about the idea of having a llama convention at the hotel our guests were staying in,” the groom explains. “It was exciting for our family when they found out, and we looked forward to seeing everyone’s reaction.”
It turns out that the llamas were a big hit with Drew and Alexis’ wedding guests. “We didn’t witness the first llama appearance the afternoon of our wedding, but family and friends recounted the experience. The kids loved it and so did our guests,” Drew shares. “The guests who were the most surprised were the ones not staying at the hotel, who came just to hang out… They were shocked. I’m sure many had thought we had planned it, but it was all a coincidence,” he insists.
Drew also maintains that the llamas did not crash the couple’s wedding. “We actually crashed their party,” he recalls. “They allowed us to join their party. We were hanging out in our suite with all our family and friends when someone came in and said, ‘Hey, the llama people have invited us to come hang out.'”
“We didn’t know the llamas would be inside dancing and having fun with their llama parents,” the new groom explains. ” The DJ was playing pop and rap music and the kids were dancing. We danced all night and the DJ – who was a llama owner – even let us request some songs.”
Drew tells us that his bride was the llamas’ biggest fan. The newlyweds and their guests were all impressed with how well-mannered and groomed the animals were.
In their amazing post-wedding photos, it is obvious that Drew and Alexis didn’t mind sharing the spotlight with their new animal friends. “The llamas were very friendly,” Drew tells The Knot. “They were also such tall animals that we could stand eye to eye with them. That made some folks apprehensive to get close, but the llama owners assured us of their kindness, and pretty soon everyone was petting and talking to them.”
Drew – a chiropractic physician and business owner – met Alexis – a Chinese medicine specialist – on Match.com. The duo dated for nine months before getting engaged. They truly don’t mind that their wedding after-party included the furry guests. Judging by the photos, they enjoyed every moment.
“Alexis has to pet every dog she sees,” Drew reveals to The Knot. “We’ve owned chickens and Alexis loves horses. We are very much animal lovers.”
Their dog – 15-year old retriever-Shepard mix – was not at their wedding, but he played a part in the couple’s special day. Drew wrote his vows with Olli by his side and stated that Olli was a part of Alexis’ life first, but he’s thankful the pup is willing to share.
Congrats to the happy family!
