Wells Adams is, well, not having it. The Bachelorette alum, who’s dating actress Sarah Hyland, had a few concerns to address on his podcast, Your Favorite Thing, starting with the engagement ring he will soon be purchasing for his girlfriend.

Adams and the Modern Family star have been vocal about their relationship moving towards marriage, though some recent critics have speculated that the proposal will come from her budget—not his.

“Can I go on the record right here?” Adams, 34, commented on his podcast alongside Brandi Cyrus. “I will pay for this ring, I promise you. It will come out of my bank account, okay?”

Adams went on the record in response to a joke made on the Bobby Bones Show about how the ABC actress would be buying her own ring. This wasn’t an isolated incident from the crew behind the radio program.

“They’ve been trolling me for years. Years,” Adams noted of the co-hosts. “It’s one of those things where it’s like, ‘Okay, I get it. You guys don’t like me. I don’t know what I did to you.’”

Bones and his colleagues have poked fun at Adams and his salary over the years, even commenting recently on his upgraded home with Hyland due to the nature of their relationship. “Aside from the fact that it’s just kind of mean, what’s funny to me is that it’s all about money for them,” Adams added. “…If I’ve learned anything throughout my career, it’s that success in life has very little to do with your bank account. You know? And the sooner you realize that, the sooner you’re going to be happy.”

Hyland previously revealed to Jimmy Kimmel how their relationship first started—Adams sent her a direct message on Instagram, writing: “The next time you’re in L.A., I’m taking you out for drinks and tacos.”

Their relationship progressed from friendship to romance especially when Hyland underwent surgery for a second kidney transplant in 2017.

“He’s seen me at my worst. I think that’s why I feel the most beautiful in his eyes, because he still finds me beautiful after seeing all that,” she recently told Self. “It was a really intimate start to a relationship to have to go through those hurdles at the very, very, very beginning when you’re just even getting to know a person. Also, falling in love with someone before you can really be intimate. I did not believe that that was a thing, but it is.”
