Roles reversed! Jada Pinkett Smith‘s mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, wed her fiance last week – and the bride’s daughter was there to celebrate the special occasion, along with her husband, Will Smith.
The 63-year old bride wore a stunning, white beaded and lace Berta gown for the nuptials. The Israeli-based fashion house posted a photo of the newlyweds with the bride’s famous daughter and son-in-law standing beside them.
Jada, 44, who also wore white for the ceremony, opted for a simple, more modest design, careful to not upstage her mom on her big day.
The mother-daughter duo have had their share of difficult times, but they’ve always remained close. During an interview with Redbook, they opened up about their relationship. Jada admitted that after marrying Will, 47, in 1997 and starting their family a year later, she “disappeared for a while” – which was difficult for her mother.
“I expressed feeling a separateness that she wasn’t even aware of,” Adrienne told the magazine. “I was comparing our relationship to the relationship my sister has with her children. But my sister’s children and grandchildren are all in the same city. And I still live in Baltimore. So there’s a distance, and Jada has so much on her plate, but I really did feel kind of left out.”
Once her mom opened-up about her feelings, Jada put more effort into the relationship. “After she told me that, I tried to call her more. I would say, ‘I’m coming to your house and I am going to organize your closets.’ Part of showing that you love someone has to do with that personal touch,” she shared. The women have clearly strengthened their bond over the years.
As for her marriage, Jada appears to keep an open mind. Her husband has been busy promoting Suicide Squad since its release in August, as well as filming Collateral Beauty – which is set to be in theaters this December.
Jada returns for season three of the popular Fox drama, Gotham, as Fish Mooney, premiering September 19. But despite busy schedules, she trusts her famous hubby.
“You’ve got to trust who you’re with. And at the end of the day, I’m not here to be anybody’s watcher,” the actress told Howard Stern last year. “I’m not his watcher. He’s a grown man. Here’s what I trust — I trust that the man that Will is, is the man of integrity. So, he’s got all the freedom in the world. As long as Will can look himself in the mirror and be okay, I’m good.”
