A woman named Sara Cunningham experienced viral fame this week after she shared a brief but powerful Facebook post in support of LGBTQ+ couples.
On July 20, Cunningham posted a photo of herself with one celebratory hand up in the sky, which she coupled with several thoughts. “PSA. If you need a mom to attend your same sex wedding because your biological mom won’t. Call me,” she captioned the pic. “I’m there. I’ll be your biggest fan. I’ll even bring the bubbles.”
The post itself has since garnered more than 7,600 shares on Facebook with hundreds of comments in support from random people. “This makes my heart happy,” one person commented. “My mom left, my dad passed away and I’m lesbian so I might need to find a mom.”
Cunningham, a mom of two based in Oklahoma, subsequently revealed why she personally felt propelled to extend the sweet gesture to others.
“Hey precious people, I wrote a book about how I came to terms with being a woman of faith and a mother with a gay son,” she added in a follow-up comment. “The journey took us from the church to the pride parade without losing my faith. I wrote if for moms like me and I hear from the LGBTQ community that read the book.”
She told BuzzFeed News in a separate interview that her personal story with her son has since brought her to activism. Since 2016, she’s married numerous LGBTQ+ couples as an officiant, and now, she’s tackling yet another wedding role as a stand-in parent.
“The post came from hearing from several same-sex couples—how their parents refuse to attend their wedding, or even acknowledge their relationships,” she told BuzzFeed. “People need hope—I sure do—and we need to be that for each other in any way, shape, or form.”
