Woman With Alopecia Removes Her Wig for Inspiring Engagement Photos

It was a secret that Mackenzie Meaux concealed for 15 years before she recently made the choice to boldly reveal a condition she had been struggling with since she was a young girl. Now 21, Meaux decided the time had arrived to reveal her alopecia to friends—in the form of her engagement photos.

In a now-viral post on Facebook, Meaux shared her engagement session (taken by The Frost Collective), which included images of herself removing her brunette wig. “This is probably the most difficult thing I will ever do in my life,” the Crosby, Texas-based student wrote. “While taking our engagement pictures, I decided it was time to stop hiding from the one thing I tried hardest to conceal for almost 15 years. It was time to embrace my true self.”

Meaux went on to share that she had been diagnosed with the condition—which causes your hair follicles to cease from producing more hair—at age 8. “Doctors can not figure out why or what will bring it back. They call it the mystery disease,” she continued on Facebook. “Nothing else is wrong with the body other than hair will not grow. As you can imagine for a young girl, this is a huge confidence killer. A women’s hair is their beauty and a main part of their self image.”

The bride-to-be revealed that she had been bullied for the condition by other kids. “Along the way, I lost all hope that I could ever feel beautiful again. Until I met Bryan… I have never felt more confident or more beautiful than I do with him by my side,” she added. “He has helped me be brave and realize that hair is not what makes you beautiful and is not what makes people love you, it is truly all about what’s on the inside; and for that I am forever grateful for him. He has shown me that the people who love you do not care whether or not you have hair, and the ones who do are not worth your time or your love. So this is me, the true me.”

The post itself has garnered more than 270 shares.

Meaux serves as another bold example of someone grappling with alopecia—and embracing it. Another bride named Kylie Bamberger recently went viral after she had decided to remove her wig on her wedding day. “I just walked in…I was like, ‘Well, this is me!’” she told Health.
