Not your average bride. HBO Girls star Zosia Mamet finally explained to Stephen Colbert why she was so low-key about her 2016 wedding to Evan Jonigkeit in a new appearance on The Late Show.

“I was secretly engaged,” Mamet noted this weekend. “We just wanted it to be our thing. Our families knew.”

The actress even concealed her engagement from close friends until she and her husband took to Instagram in October 2016 to confirm their secret nuptials to, well, everyone. “My best friend, my soulmate, my HUSBAND, I love you,” Mamet wrote at the time. “Here’s to forever and a day.”

Mamet also told Colbert during their chat that he actually had a slight connection to the wedding. The bride ended up purchasing her dress (an off-the-rack, black Givenchy piece) after her last appearance on his show.

“I went directly from our taping to the place I got my wedding dress,” Mamet continued. “And I bought my wedding dress that night.”

With the exception of finding the venue, Mamet previously told Vogue that wedding planning was nice and relaxed. As recalled, the bride and groom got married in an intimate fall ceremony at Cedar Lakes Estate in New York’s Hudson Valley.

“I’ve never really dreamt of my wedding day,” she previously told the magazine. “I’ve only dreamt of finding a person who I’d want to have a wedding day with — so I was starting from scratch… One night soon after Evan proposed I went down a Google rabbit hole. It was my only conceivable bridezilla moment. When I emerged after about five solid hours, I had found Cedar Lakes Estate.”

Typically, the rustic venue is booked far in advance especially in the fall–right when Mamet planned to get married. “We called, and they happened to have an opening for a visit the following day, my birthday,” she shared. “So we drove there, and the second we entered the property, we fell in love.”

Somehow, a couple had canceled their October 1 wedding. “It all just seemed too serendipitous to say no,” she previously noted. “So we said yes.”
